Playing Out on Windsor Road

by Chloe Charrington

Playing Out aims to give an opportunity to children to experience the joy of playing out on their own streets.

The model is simple. The street is closed for just two hours (minimising disruption for the residents, in the hope that it can become a regular event). No games are planned for the children, and they are given no instructions. It’s pure play. Children are brilliant at making up their own fun when given the opportunity. The road is marshalled at each end by residents, making it safe for everyone.

Windsor Road in Abergavenny has held three Playing Out sessions so far, which have all been a great success. Children from Windsor Road and surrounding streets came out to play with bikes, scooters, footballs and chalk. It was wonderful seeing them enjoying the space which is right on their doorsteps, and it was an added bonus to see adult residents getting together over a cup of tea. It created a lovely atmosphere on the street – one that we hope to repeat many more times.
