Abergavenny Cycle Group’s summer programme of social bike rides offers something for everyone who enjoys exploring the Monmouthshire by bike.
All the rides are free to join, and led by experienced ride leaders. The pace is always gentle, there’s plenty of time to stop and enjoy the countryside and nobody is left behind.
Sunday 8 April: The Man Engine
Family-friendly ride up the railway line path to Blaenavon to witness the Man Engine parade. Pack a picnic. 20 miles, almost all traffic-free.

Saturday/Sunday 21/22nd April: Weekend camping trip.
Family-friendly ride on the canal towpath to Brecon and an overnight camp at Pencelli Castle campsite.

Sunday 13 May: The Bluebell Run.
To Coed y Bwnydd hill fort and its dazzling displays of bluebells. Picnic lunch. Lanes, some hilly. 25 miles. Ride leader: Richard Lewis.
Sunday 10 June: Around the Sugarloaf.
Lunch at the Dragon’s Head, Llangenny (booking required for pub lunch numbers). 20 miles, some hilly. Ride leader: Adam Hayes (07786 578245).
Sunday 8 July: Cheer on the Velothon.
Up the railway path and Tyla climb to the top of the Blorenge to watch the Velothon ride pass by. Over the top and back along the canal. 20 miles, some rough and hilly lanes. Picnic lunch. Ride leaders: Rich & Kate Corken.
Sunday 11 August: Grwyne Fawr and garden picnic.
Up the Gwryne Fawr valley and a picnic lunch at the beautiful and eco-friendly Nant y Bedd garden (£5 entry). 25 miles on lanes, one big hill. Ride leader: Jack Thurston (07973 155278).
Sunday 25 August: The Blackberry Run.
Traffic free up the railway path to picnic at the Cydach Gorge and blackberry picking. 15 miles. Ride leaders: Rich & Kate Corken.
Sunday 2 September: Around the Skirrid.
Quiet lanes around the Skirrid, lunch at the Hunter’s Moon pub (booking required for numbers for lunch). 25 miles on lanes, some hills. Ride leader Sam Charrington (07967 179491).
Sunday 30 September: The Hungry Cyclist
A tour of local food producers, with tastings en route. 30 miles. Booking required. Ride leader: Jack Thurston (07973 155278).
